What is the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mayoral Election?
Like many combined authority mayors, the first Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Mayor was elected in 2017. The Mayor’s role is to lead the local council, act as a link between the local council and central government, and represent the local area at a national level.
What are their responsibilities?
The mayor has powers for transport and local planning and development. Within the remit of transport, the mayor has responsibility for the devolved transport budget and is responsible for identifying important roads. The powers over strategic also extend to working with central government to develop a Land Commission.
The decisions made concerning Cambridgeshire and Peterborough have an impact on anyone who lives in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, Fenland, Huntingdonshire, and Peterborough.
Why is voting in this election important?
The mayor represents the people of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough – the more people who vote, the more accurately the mayor will represent and reflect people’s preferences, including yours.
It is vital that you exercise your voice through voting as this is what helps shape the future of the area you live in. Voting is the chance to have your say on the issues that affect you in your local area, issues that can impact your day-to-day life. It’s important that people feel they have a connection to the change that is brought about, every vote counts.

How does the election work?
The mayor is elected by the Supplementary Vote system, voters have a first and second preference. If a candidate wins over 50% of the vote, they are elected. If no candidates win over 50%, all candidates are eliminated except the top two, who will then be allocated the second preference votes in order to decide the winner.
